James “Jim” Moore, 88, of Downing, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, at the Clark County Nursing Home in Kahoka.
He was born July 4, 1937, in Kahoka, the son of Vern and Martha McCort Moore. Jim experienced the loss of his mother at a young age, and his father later married RaVeigh Hartell, who raised him as her own.
Jim graduated from Montrose High School with the Class of 1955. On July 26, 1959, he was united in marriage to Karen Hagmeier in Montrose. She survives.
In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his children: Fred Moore (Toni Loges) of Downing, Missouri, Kathy Anderson (Hollie) of Lancaster, Missouri, Robin Roberts (Kelly) of Harrisburg, Missouri, Susan Gunnell of Bussey, Iowa, and Jesse Moore (Robin) of Menlo, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; and twenty-one great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Juanita Mann of Keokuk, along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, RaVeigh; two sons, Timothy Moore and Wesley Moore; son-in-law, Jerry Gunnell; and two half-sisters, Sharon Lowell and Kay Kuddes.
Jim served as the manager of Modern Dairy in Montrose, Iowa, before moving to Missouri in 1974. Jim and Karen became the owner and operator of Hilltop Dairy. He took great pride in his work and in providing for his family.
Outside of work, Jim found joy in riding and training horses, as well as repairing saddles and tack. He and Karen also served as coordinators of the Circle H Ranch Pee Wee Horse Show in Montrose, a role they truly enjoyed as they supported and encouraged young riders. He treasured the years when his children were young—hauling them to ballgames, coaching, and cheering them on from the sidelines.
Above all else, Jim loved his family. Time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren brought him his greatest happiness.
A celebration of life will be held 2-4 p.m. Saturday, April 11, 2026 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka with the family meeting with friends at that time.
Memorials may be made to the Montrose Cemetery.
