Obituary

James Edward Mortimer, 54, of Warsaw, IL, died Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL. He was born on March 5, 1961 in Chicago, IL, the son of James William and Mary Hartsfield Mortimer. He graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1979 and attended Southeastern Community College. During his high school years, James maintained a 4.0 grade point average. He was also a talented baseball player and received the MVP Award for baseball. On February 4, 2011, James was united in marriage to Becky Johns in Keokuk, IA. She survives. Other survivors include one son, Adam Mortimer of Meredosia, IL, one daughter, Brittney Mortimer of Dallas, TX, three step-daughters, Katherine Mills of Stuart, IA, Colleen Mills of Sioux City, IA and Corrina Mills of Oskaloosa, IA, two step-grandchildren, Elijah and Azylia Mills, his mother, Mary Mortimer of Keokuk, two brothers, David P. Mortimer of Keokuk and Gary Mortimer and wife Michelle of Ft. Madison, two sisters, Debra Cook and husband Chris of Keokuk and Janet Payne and husband Jamie of Burlington, his mother-in-law, Blondina Johns of Keokuk and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and step nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, James William Mortimer, his father-in-law, Raymond Johns and one brother-in-law, Paul Johns. James was a veteran of the United States Army and was stationed in Germany while proudly serving his country. He had been employed at Coca Cola for several years and was currently employed as the Assistant Plant Manager at Decker Manufacturing in Keokuk where he had worked for the past seventeen years. James was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, the Hawkeyes, the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Minnesota Vikings and was a dedicated player in the Fantasy Football and Baseball Leagues. Some of his favorite pastimes were playing Mafia Wars on Facebook, watching movies, collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia and watching thunderstorms. He enjoyed reading The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit but his favorite novel was The Magician. He was an excellent bowler and skilled chess player and went to state tournaments for both. Most of all, James loved his family. He was a wonderful, devoted husband, dad and grandpa who leaves memories that will live on in their hearts forever. A Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday at the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk with Pastor Alex Kloster officiating. A procession to the cemetery will leave the funeral home at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will be held after 3 p.m., Monday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with the family meeting with friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the family.
