James "Earl" Baugher, 81 of Keokuk, IA died Friday, March 22, 2013 at River Hill Village in Keokuk. He was born April 16, 1931 in Quincy, IL the son of Loren and Hazel Moore Baugher. On December 24, 1958 he was united in marriage to Wanda Smith in Kahoka, MO. She survives. Other survivors include one son, Steven Baugher of Topeka, KS, one daughter, Denise Wharton and her husband Jeff of Topeka, KS, two grandsons, Jason Wharton and his wife Danica and Aaron Wharton, one sister, Juanita Smeltser of Wayland, MO, two nephews, Doug Smeltser and Leland Thompson and several cousins. Earl was in the Keokuk National Guard and at one time was the Company Commander. He joined the Army Reserves and retired at the rank of Major. He worked for Hoerner Boxes and following company changes for thirty years, retiring in 1986. He then moved to Florida and did consulting for Green Bay Packing in Ft. Worth, TX and for Stone Container in Dallas, TX. Earl was a member of the First Baptist Church in Keokuk and United States Tennis Association. He had a passion for tennis, he played three or four times a week. In the summer months he would travel to Iowa and play tennis with a group of friends while he was here. A graveside service with military rites was held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 26th, 2013 at the Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk with Pastor Dale Thomas officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Lee County Hospice or Keokuk Community School Foundation/KHS Tennis Courts or of the donor's choice.
