James Delbert Miller, 77, of Keokuk, IA died Sunday, June 10, 2007, at his home. Jim Miller was a Keokuk native, born July 17, 1929 to James Edison Miller and Cordelia Arnold Miller. On March 17, 1973, Jim was united in marriage to Alice Jessie Schneider in Argyle, IA. She preceded him in death on December 3, 1987. He worked at the Dryden rubber plant in Keokuk, IA until 1952 when he was hired on at Hoerner Box, also in Keokuk. He worked there until his retirement at age 62. He was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Keokuk, IA. As a young man, he was an avid motorcyclist. He enjoyed working with his hands and pursued many hobbies. He was a self-taught taxidermist and studied art through a correspondence school. He painted and whittled and produced many landscape scenes and carvings. He was also an accomplished woodworker. He designed, built, and refinished furniture. Other interests included restoring antiques and repairing timepieces. He is survived by two sons, Kenneth Miller and his wife Patricia of Glendora, CA, and Scott Miller and his wife Leona of Skokie, IL one daughter Gail Miller of Chicago, IL and four grandchildren, Daniel, Taryn, Aileen and James. Additional survivors include four nephews, Floyd Jr., Terry, Rick and James Hamelton, two nieces, Darlene Burgess and Vicki Moore, sisters-in-law Dixie VanZile, Lana Lee, Janet Hoppe and Karen Nichols, brothers-in-law Steve, Jack, George and Art Schneider, and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Alice Schneider Miller and their son, Daryl, and by his sister, Viva Hamelton. His children wish to express their deepest gratitude to his nephew Rick Hamelton and his wife Tina of Hamilton, IL for the love, companionship, and selfless care they gave their uncle in his later years as his health and spirit declined. Further thanks is given to his brother-in-law, George Schneider and his wife Charlotte of Argyle, his cousin, Gary Whitaker of Peaksville, MO, and Carla Albright of Keokuk for their constancy and support. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Pastor Dave Barrett officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk, IA.
