James H. Callahan, 78, of Montrose, IA, died Saturday, March 8, 2008 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital in Fort Madison, IA.
He was born on August 31, 1929 in Kewanee, IL the son of Fred and Edna Howard Callahan. On January 12, 1951, James was united in marriage to Harriet Crumrine in Chillicothe, IL. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Dawn Callahan of Ft. Madison, IA, and Tina Gibson and her husband Terry of Argyle, IA, three sons, Ronald James Callahan and his wife De of East Peoria, IL, William Dean Callahan and his wife Janet of Brimfield, IL, and Michael Owen Callahan and his wife Linda of Montrose, IA, eight grandchildren, Jim Moberg, Sam DiFederico, Mike Gibson, Sara Gibson, Tim Callahan, Jennifer Admire, Sean Callahan and Erica Dringenberg, five great-grandchildren and one sister, Jeanne Magnuson of Henry, IL.
He was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Tera Gibson and Jennifer Eddy.
James had been a resident of Chillicothe, IL for most of his life and graduated from the Chillicothe High School with the Class of 1948.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict.
He had been employed with the Santa Fe Railroad for forty-four years, retiring in 1992. Following his retirement, he moved to Montrose, IA.
He was of member of the Mohammad Shrine Transportation Unit in Peoria, IL, a member of Am Vets and the VFW in Chillicothe, IL and the American Legion in Farmington, IA.
James loved being outdoors spending time fishing, hunting, trap shooting, playing horseshoes and gardening. He enjoyed sports and was an avid Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs fan.
A Gathering of Remembrance for family and friends was held from 4 – 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 11 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA.
Memorials were established for the Montrose Fire and Rescue Squad.
