Herbert D. Hawkins

Herbert D. Hawkins, 86 of Ft. Madison, IA formerly of Keokuk, IA died Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, IA. He was born January 30, 1925 in Keokuk, IA the son of Frank and Bessie Bennett Hawkins. On March 17, 1946 he was united in marriage to Linda Lee Wood in Keokuk, IA. She preceded him in death in 1998. Herbert was a lifelong farmer and owned a farm on Argyle Road in rural Keokuk. He enjoyed dancing in his younger years and he and his wife were very good dancers. Mainly he enjoyed working on his farm, growing crops and raising pigs and cattle. He is survived by two grandchildren, Gary Hawkins of Colorado and Penny Forrester of Colorado, four great-grandchildren, one daughter-in-law, Bonnie Hawkins of New London, IA, two sisters-in-law, Shirley Wood of Keokuk and Nina Winters of Wayland, MO, one brother-in-law, David Hamma of Nauvoo, IL, several nieces and nephews and a special friend Eunice Tate of Argyle, IA. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Frank Hawkins and Larry Hawkins, two brothers, Ted Hawkins and Gerald Hawkins, two sisters, Lenore Hawkins in infancy and Lula Richardson. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, November 11, 2011 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA. Burial was in the Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk, IA. Memorials may be made to the Keokuk Humane Society or The Kensington in Ft. Madison, IA.
