Obituary

Herbert N. Curfman, 93, of the Montrose Health Center, where he made his home for the last two years and formerly of Keokuk died Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. He was born on February 16, 1921 in Gregory Landing, MO, the son of John Cleveland and Nellie Neves Curfman. He graduated from Wayland High School in Wayland, MO with the Class of 1939. His senior class came up with the name "The Avenue of the Saints" for the road which connects St. Paul, MN to St. Louis, MO On August 28, 1970, Herb was united in marriage to Josephine Clark Stevenson in Kahoka, MO. She preceded him in death on November 4, 2012. Herb had been employed at St. Joseph Hospital and Keokuk Area Hospital for thirty years and retired in 1983. He also was the owner/operator of The Hub and Fun House in Keokuk. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Keokuk, where he taught Sunday School. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge. For Herb, life was a treasure hunt and he lived by the motto, "One person's trash is another person's treasure". He was always looking for things to add to his many collections or to fix up and sell. For many years, Herb ran a concession trailer at local carnivals and school events. He entertained many people at church and the nursing home by making cotton candy to share with everyone. He was a regular visitor at several Keokuk kindergarten classes when they were studying the letter C. Known as Mr. C, Herb would bring his cotton candy machine to school and spin a wonderful treat for all the students. He is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Webster and her husband Russell of Wyaconda, MO, Mary Jo Columbus and her husband Albert of Keokuk, two sons, Jack Curfman and his wife Diane of Carthage, IL and Terry Stevenson and his wife Isabelle of Picayune, MS, twenty one grandchildren, forty-two great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Cleveland and Ernest Curfman and a step-son Michael Stevenson. A graveside service was held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 17th, 2014 at the Sand Cemetery in St. Francisville, MO with Reverend David Turner officiating. There was no visitation. Memorials may be made to the Sand Cemetery.
