Henry Mitchell, 86, of Montrose, IA, died Monday, March 14, 2005 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, IA. He was born on December 20, 1918 in Antelope, KS, the son of William and Dessie Hill Mitchell. Henry was united in marriage to Juanita Harrison on July 11, 1940 in Kahoka, MO. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Patricia Hamelton and her husband Merle of Keokuk, IA, and Pamela Lipper and her husband Larry of Burlington, IA, one son, David Mitchell of Burlington, IA, eight grandchildren, Karen Swinderman, Michelle Lamb, Robert Lipper, Terrie Whiting, David Mitchell, Jr, Jennifer Mitchell, Chuck Mitchell and John Mitchell, eleven great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, one step-great grandchild, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Denver, Johnie, Mike, Arnold and one in infancy, his twin sister, Hattie Newby and his sister Virdie Houtz. Mr. Mitchell was a veteran of the United States Navy and proudly served his country during WW II. He had been employed at Sheaffers in Ft. Madison for twenty six years, at Dial Corporation in rural Montrose for eleven years and also owned and operated Mitchell's Electric in Montrose. He was a lifetime member of the Joppa Masonic Lodge of Montrose. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow where he served on the Tribal Council as Grey Fox. He had been very active in the Boy Scouts and served as a pack leader and a counselor at Camp Eastman. He was very skilled NRA certified instructor and had taught many youth how to properly use and shoot the rifle. He enjoyed spending the winters in Florida and searching for shells on the beach. When at home in Montrose, he loved to go fishing on the Mississippi and enjoyed watching the many wildlife that roamed on his property. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 17 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Reverend Goldie Laymon officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk, IA. A public Masonic service was held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts or the Trinity United Methodist Church of Montrose, IA.
