Harriet L. Callahan, 77, of Montrose, IA, died Friday, January 21, 2011 at the Ft. Madison Community Hospital in Ft. Madison, IA.
She was born on August 6, 1933 in Chillicothe, IL, the daughter of Owen and Lola Simpson Crumrine. On January 12, 1951, Harriet was united in marriage to James Howard Callahan in Chillicothe, IL. He preceded her in death on March 8, 2008.
Harriet graduated from Chillicothe High School with the Class of 1951.
She was of the Catholic Faith.
She had been employed as a dispatcher at the Chillicothe Police Department and then worked selling boats at Hamms Holiday Harbor in Chillicothe. Harriet worked her last twelve years at Smurfs Restaurant and Bar in Montrose, IA with her daughter Dawn. She was known to many as "Mama Smurf".
Harriet loved the water, fishing, bowling and crocheting. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinal and Chicago Bear fan.
She is survived by two daughters, Dawn Gaylord and her husband Darrol of Ft. Madison, IA and Tina Gibson and her husband Terry of Argyle, IA, three sons, Ron Callahan and his wife De of East Peoria, IL, Bill Callahan and his wife Janet of Brimfield, IL and Michael Callahan and his wife Linda of Montrose, IA, eight grandchildren, Jim Moberg, Sam DeFederico, Mike Gibson, Sara Gibson, Tim Callahan, Jennifer Admire, Sean Callahan and Erica Dringenberg and nine great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two granddaughters, Tara Gibson and Jennifer Eddy and two sisters, Eudora Klasin and Marjorie Gallop.
A Gathering of Remembrance for family and friends was held from 5 – 8 p.m. Thursday, January 27, 2011 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA.
Memorials may be made to the Montrose Fire and Rescue or the Montrose Health Care Center.
