Harold R. Turtle, 100, of Keokuk, IA passed peacefully into his heavenly home surrounded by his family on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at River Hills Village in Keokuk., He was born March 15, 1918 in Kahoka, MO the son of Ernest and Anna Overhulser Turtle. On September 26, 1942 he was united in marriage to Helen Carlson in Keokuk. She survives. Other survivors include, one daughter, Joan Heckenberg (Art) of Burlington, IA, one son Richard "Dick" Turtle of St. Louis, MO, five grandchildren, Diana Krueger (Dan) of Keokuk, Rob Kelly (Brandi) of Keokuk, Kristy Kelly of Stronghurst, IL, Karyn Nunn (Jeff) of St. Louis, MO and Kathy Turtle of Kansas City, MO, five great-grandchildren, Kelly Peavy (Anthony) of Albuquerque , NM, Kolton Krueger and Brittney Kelly both of Keokuk, Addie and Cora Nunn both of St. Louis, MO, three step-grandchildren, Brian Granaman (Nancy) of North Liberty, IA, Mark Heckenberg (Leslie) of Stockport, IA and Stacy Heckenberg of Burlington, IA, seven step-great-grandchildren, Ryan Granaman (Melissa) of West Branch, IA, Riley Granaman of North Liberty, IA, Jory Heckenberg (Stefanie), Jansen and Jonah Heckenberg all of Stockport, IA, Stoan and Adie Heckenberg both of Burlington, IA, two step-great-great-grandchildren, Olivia Granaman of West Branch and Kasen Heckenberg of Stockport, one brother-in-law, Lloyd Apple of Montana, one sister-in-law, Doris Carlson of Keokuk and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter-in-law, Pat Turtle, one step-grandson, Mike Heckenberg, two brothers, Howard Turtle (Ethel) and Floyd Turtle (Philomene), two sisters, Anna Louise Apple and Gertrude Yablonski (Adam), seven brothers-in-law, Verl, Harold (Mildred), Ralph (Inez), Vernon (Mildred), Chester (Mary), Donald (Lucille) and Jim Carlson. Harold was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country during WWII, receiving his Honorable Discharge in December of 1945. He had been employed by Hubinger's in Keokuk for many years and retired in April 0f 1980. Harold was a member of First Lutheran Church in Keokuk. He enjoyed bowling and had been on several leagues. Harold loved spending time tinkering in the garage. He also enjoyed fishing and camping. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and had the opportunity to see a game in the new stadium in St. Louis with his family. Harold was an excellent barbeque chef and his specialty was grilling pork chops. Most of all, Harold loved his family and treasured the time he spent with them. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Pastor Rodney Underwood officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Visitation will be held after 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Vigen Memorial Home with the family meeting with friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran church of Keokuk.
