Harold L. Atkins, 68, of Keokuk, IA, died Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at the Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, IL. He was born February 24, 1940 in Keokuk, IA, the son of Robert Otis and Frances Lenore Watson Atkins. He first married Elsie M. Sapp on September 11, 1960 and later married Dorothy Sackfield on December 15, 1984 in Hamilton, IL, who preceded him in death on June 8, 1996. Harold attended school in Keokuk and also in Los Angeles graduating with the Class of 1958. After his high school graduation he joined the United States Navy where he proudly served for six years. He had been employed by Armour Dial in Ft. Madison for twenty years before his retirement in 2001. He was a member of the American Legion and was a member of the Pentecostal Fellowship Church. Harold enjoyed traveling, driving the countryside visiting family and friends and relaxing on his deck with his dog, Pilgrim, taking in the scenery. Most of all he was a loving father and grandfather and cherished the time he spent with his family. He is survived by six daughters, Julie Atkins and her companion Steve Pettey of Kansas City, MO, Carla Miller and her husband Bill of Oakwood, GA, Pam Gutierrez and her husband Mike of Cummings, GA, Christine Atkins-Williams of Atlanta, GA, Laura Ellingboe and her husband Perry of Hamilton, IL, Tracy Hoopingarner and her husband Duffy of Woodstock, GA, one step daughter Lisa Bolander and her husband Carl of Burlington, IA, two sisters, Kathy Brackelsberg, and her husband Dwan of Keokuk, IA, and Barbara Davila and her husband Joe of CO, half sister, Patty Warzecha and her husband Cornielius of MN, his fiancé, Jeanne Burner and her children Tommy, Scott, and Bobby, twelve grandchildren, Michael Stoneking, Kortney, Kendra, Kylee, Dalton, & Drake Ellingboe, Haley Mann, Abigail Williams, Mitchel & Lindsie Gutierrez, Lacey Lynn and James Bolander, sister in law, June Atkins Sanderson and her husband Richard of Long Beach, CA, and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Joyce Herr and Judy Atkins and one brother, Bob Atkins. Funeral services were held 11 a.m., Monday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Dana Jurgens officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the American Legion.
