Obituary

View Video Tribute Gladys Opal Welch, 102, of Norwalk, IA, formerly of Keokuk, IA, died Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at the Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, IA. Gladys was born on July 2, 1904, near Luray, MO, the daughter of William Purl and Iva Gertrude Watson Newberry. She moved with her parents to Wyaconda, MO when she was four years old. She graduated from the Wyaconda High School in 1924. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wyaconda. She moved to Keokuk, IA in 1929, and lived there until April of 2006. On October 4, 1938, Gladys married George W. Welch in Memphis, MO. He preceded her in death on March 7, 1985. Gladys became a member of the First Christian Church in Keokuk in 1953. She was a member of the Jennie Lee Class and the CWF Circle, and taught for eleven years. She was also the substitute teacher for the Ramsey and men's classes for six years. She had been employed at Sullivan Award Department Store in Keokuk for several years. She is survived by one daughter, Judy Harrison and her husband David of Norwalk, IA, one granddaughter, Kristal Harrison Daniels and her husband Tim of Norwalk, IA, and one grandson, Timm Harrison of Bartlesville, OK, two great grandsons, Noah and Braden Daniels also of Norwalk, IA. Gladys is also survived by nieces and nephews including: Rodger and Everett Newberry of Keokuk, IA, Janice Robinson of Kahoka, MO, Eva Cooke of Galesburg, IL, Eula Hanson of Bettendorf, IA, Lester Newberry of Monmouth, IL, and Richard Baker of Greentop, MO and other relatives. Her parents, four brothers and two sisters also preceded her in death. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday October 16, 2006 at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Reverend William Mitchell officiating. Burialwas in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Keokuk, IA. Memorials may be made to Iowa Health Hospice 1206 Mulberry St. Des Moines, Iowa 50309.
