George Winfield Branson, Jr.

George Winfield Branson, Jr., 94 of Keokuk, IA passed away Sunday, May 10, 2026 at home.

He was born March 12, 1932 in Keokuk, IA the son of the late George Winfield and Erma Idle Branson. He graduated from Keokuk High School with the class of 1950.

George proudly served in the United States Army from 1953-1955. Upon honorable discharge, he returned to the University of Iowa and earned a Bachelor of Science degree.

He moved to California where after several jobs accepted a position with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission which later became the U.S. Department of Energy.

In California he met and wed Judith Whealan. Though this union did not last, he was blessed with three children. He retired from the Department of Energy in 1992. In 1999, he moved back to Iowa where he “re-met” Kathryn McKay Kiser. They were married on December 23, 2000 and enjoyed twenty years of true love. Kathryn went to live with our Lord on May 1, 2021.

He is survived by two sons, Gregory (Heather) Branson of Keokuk and Jeffrey Branson of Keokuk, one daughter, Gwyn Branson of Sacramento, CA, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

A graveside service with military rights will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 14 at the Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, IA. There will be no visitation.
