View Video Tribute George E. Johnson, 82, of Keokuk, IA, died Thursday, February 9, 2006 at his home. He was born on November 10, 1924, in Creston, Iowa, the son of Walter Raymond and Darlene W. Clark Johnson. He married Betty Jean Borts on November 15, 1947 in Pendleton, IN. She preceded his in death on May 28, 1960. He married Ida Belle Carlson Mason on January 6, 1962 in Keokuk, IA. She survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Terry Ann Reinitz and her husband Gary of Knoxville, Tenn, four sons, Gary Johnson and his wife Chris of Keokuk, IA, Mark Johnson and his wife Carol of Quincy, IL, David Johnson and his wife Paula of Charlotte, NC and Brian Johnson and his wife Cheryl of Palm Harbor, FL, one step-son, Roger Mason and his wife Jerilyn of Gilbert, AZ, six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Kenneth Johnson. George graduated from the Creston High School with the Class of 1941. He attended Creston Junior College and Iowa State University before entering the service in June of 1943. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during WW II in the 838th Bombardment Squardon as a combat crew member on B-17 bombers over Germany. He completed twenty-nine missions. He received his Honorable discharge on November 6, 1945. He returned to the University of Iowa where he received his BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering in August of 1947. George worked for a short time in Indianapolis, IN before accepting employment at Midwest Carbide in Keokuk, IA. He worked there from January 1948 to January 1985 in numerous positions, retiring as President of the company. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Keokuk. During his years in Keokuk, IA George had been a past member of the Keokuk Jaycees, Elks, the Hamilton VFW, the Keokuk American Legion, Rotary Club and the Keokuk Chamber of Commerce. He had served as the director of the Keokuk Library Foundation and had been a director at Keokuk Savings Bank and Norwest Bank. He also served on the Human Relations and Civil Service Commission. Graveside services with military rites were held at 11 A.M. Wednesday, February 15, at the Keokuk National Cemetery with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Memorials may be made to the Keokuk Library, Keokuk, IA or the Hamilton Library, Hamilton, IL.
