George David Varner, 84, of Ursa, IL, formerly of Monticello, IL, died Sunday, January 22, 2012 at his home. He was born on December 1, 1927 in Monticello, IL, the son of Stevenson Falstaff and Laura Bertha Fowler Varner. On May 29, 1949, George was united in marriage to Leona Catherine Eyer in Decatur, IL. She survives. Other survivors include one son, David Varner and his wife Jan of Moweaqua, IL, three daughters, Kathy Park of St. Louis, MO, Pam Varner and her fiancé Pete Richardson of Burlington, IA and Joy Goodside and her husband Ron of Shelby, IA, ten grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, two sisters, Florence Wrench of Marshfield, MO and Linda Fombelle of Decatur, IL, one brother, Dwight Steve Varner of Monticello, IL and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. George graduated from the Monticello High School with the Class of 1946. He had been employed at Macon Seed Company in Decatur, IL for seventeen years. He then worked at several seed companies in Iowa. In 1983, he moved to Ursa, IL and was employed at Lewis Seed Company until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of the Wabash Historical Society and Toastmasters International. George enjoyed collecting and building Wabash Railroad "O" Scale Model trains. He also collected Wabash railroad memorabilia. Memorial services were held at 11a.m. Saturday, February 4, 2012 at the Monticello United Methodist Church, 212 South Independence, Monticello, IL.
