Gary Alan Johnson

Gary A. Johnson, 76, of Keokuk, passed away Thursday, September 17, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

He was born March 7, 1950, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Betty Borts Johnson and George Johnson.

Gary attended Keokuk Senior High School. Following high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on July 1, 1971.

On February 12, 1972 he was united in marriage to Christine Brosi in Keokuk, Iowa.

Gary was employed with the United States Postal Service as a postal carrier from 1978 until his retirement in 2000. He was a member of American Legion Post #41 and took great pride in helping with military funeral honors for fellow veterans.

Gary had a natural talent for working with his hands and loved spending time tinkering in his garage. A true “grease monkey,” he could fix just about anything and especially enjoyed restoring vintage cars. He was also an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed following the races. Traveling was another favorite pastime, but above all, Gary cherished the time he spent with his family. He especially enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren and treasured the many memories they made together.

He is survived by his wife, Christine Johnson of Keokuk; his son, Cory Johnson (Michelle) of Hermosa Beach, California; his daughter, Geanna Johnson of Denver, Colorado; two grandsons, Konrad Sherman and Von Sherman; a granddaughter, Scout Johnson; two brothers, Mark Johnson (Carol) of Quincy and Dave Johnson (Paula) of Charlotte, North Carolina; and a sister, Terry Reintz (Gary) of Knoxville, Tennessee, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Brian Johnson.

A private family graveside service will be held at the Keokuk National Cemetery.

The Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk is assisting the family with arrangements.
