Frances Irene Komer, 92 of Keokuk, IA died Friday, February 1, 2013 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. She was born November 5, 1920 in Green Castle, Mo the daughter of Ross Hamilton and Wilma Odessa Singley Quint. Frances was first united in marriage to Claude Higgens in July of 1938 to this union three children were born. She later married William Komer on June 21, 1980 in Keokuk, IA. He preceded her in death on August 5, 1982. Irene graduated from the Green City High School with the Class of 1938. She had been employed by Kirksville Osteopathic Hospital as an LPN for twenty years and Porter Paint as a secretary for twenty years, retiring in 1984. Irene was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. She enjoyed being outside boating and spending time in her garden putting her green thumb to work. She is survived by one daughter, Mary Ginsberg and her husband Ron of Keokuk, IA, two step-sons, Tom Komer and his wife Marsha of Moberly, MO and Anthony Komer of Ventura, CA, one step-daughter, Sandra Komer Wessell of Bonners Ferry ID, six grandchildren, Lori (Sayre) Zuppa, Terry Sayre, Nicole Ginsberg, Tara (Ginsberg) Helenthal, Pam (Butler) Schmeid and Scott Komer, fifteen great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Ginsberg, Ryan Shoaff, Brandon Kainz, Isabelle Helenthal, Austin Sayer, Haley Sayer, Nicholas Sayer, Michael Zuppa, Tyler Schmeid, Megan Wessell, Jocelyn Wessell, Courtney Wessell, Heather Wessell, William Komer, and Ashely Komer, one aunt, Nellie Medlin of Unionville, MO and many nieces. She is preceded in death by her companion of twenty-eight years, James "Red" Northrup, her parents, two daughters, Judy (Sayre) Guiles and Linda Butler, one grandson, Mark Sayre and one sister, Faye Alexander. A Gathering of Remembrance was held on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 from 5-7 p.m. at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with family meeting with friends at that time. Burial will be at a later date at the Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, MO. Memorials may be made to South Lee County Relay for Life.
