Eugene "Gene" Gabel, 87 of Keokuk, IA died Sunday September, 3, 2017 at the River Hills Village in Keokuk, IA. He was born on March 31, 1930 in Keokuk, IA the son of Emil and Flossie Haisch Gabel. He graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1948. On November 1, 1961, Gene was united in marriage to Bernice Jobe in Kahoka, MO. She preceded him in death on May 2, 2014. Gene served for several years in the Iowa National Guard. For over 44 years, Gene had been employed in the grocery business. He was the meat department manager at several local grocery stores in Keokuk including, Benner's, Giant, Higgins and Jack & Jill. He also had worked at Ron's Meat Market in Ft. Madison, IA and as a Regional Manager for Aldi's. Gene was a faithful member of New Testament Christian Church in Keokuk. He enjoyed gardening and each season had a large vegetable garden which included his giant tomatoes. He also enjoyed collecting coins and baseball cards. Gene was a big fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He is survived by his son, Dr. Terrance Gabel and wife Edith of Monmouth, IL, one grandson, Leonard Gabel of Monmouth, two step-sons, Mike Young and Gary Pfeiferling and wife Patty all of Keokuk, one brother, Dale Gabel of Keokuk and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Burnette, Earl, Marshall, Don and Ray. Funeral services were held at 2 pm Saturday, September 9, 2017 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Brother Bill Abegglen officiating. Burial was at the Hickory Grove Cemetery in rural Keokuk.
