View Video Tribute Ernest "Ernie" L. Arnold, 94, of Keokuk, IA died Wednesday evening April 30, 2008 at Lexington Square in Keokuk, IA. He was born July 13, 1913 in Keokuk, IA the son of John L. and Christina Bird Arnold. On March 31, 1935 he was united in marriage to Rosalee Orth in Keokuk, IA. She survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Lee Hawes and her husband Douglas of Lake Villa, IL, two granddaughters, Dawn Hawes of Lake Villa, IL, and Cindy Haley and her husband Mark of Antioch, IL, four great grandchildren Drew Stout, Tiffany Haley, Sarah Haley and Mark Haley, Jr., one great great granddaughter, Charlotte Rose Haley and one sister Marie Everhart of Colorado Springs, CO. Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Charles and Roy Arnold and one sister, Margaret Davis. Being a man of many talents and experiences, Ernie was first employed at Reinigs Grill on S. 5th St., for George Dunlap at the Across From Uncle Sam's Café, he then joined the Carnival boxing circuit from here to St. Louis, MO., then went into sales for Shell Oil Co. covering the State of Iowa and Missouri, then for Coca Cola in Keokuk, then for three years owned the Hancock and Arnold Realty in Keokuk, then was in sales and service with Met Life's Quincy district for 12 years. When the war broke out he took leave from Met Life to drive bus for Santa Fe Trailways to transport servicemen to camps in the Chicago and St. Louis areas. Following that he went to Boulder, CO and worked as a cook and maintenance for Sigma Delta Tau Sorority and the Phydels Fraternity, then worked for Conoco Oil in Boulder, CO for four years. He then became a partner in a company that built cedar log cottages, then was owner and operator of the Snack Shack for three years, then went back into real estate, then in 1964 moved back to Iowa and was the owner and operator of the West Burlington Dry Cleaners for twenty five years, he then drove a bus for the City of Burlington for 10 years until he retired in 1986 at the age of 73. Ernie then returned to Keokuk in 1994. He was a member of the New Testament Christian Church in Keokuk, IA. Ernie enjoyed playing golf, bowling on leagues and in tournaments. He very much appreciated that he had a loving and caring wife that accepted and supported all his business endeavors. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 5 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial was in the Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk, IA. Memorial may be made to the New Testament Christian Church.
