Obituary

Elmer E. Egley, 97, of Keokuk, IA, died Thursday, October 9, 2014 at Lexington Square in Keokuk. He was born on December 23, 1916 in Wayland, MO, the son of Lewis and Mary Maurer Egley. On July 11, 1942 Elmer was united in marriage to Nellie Baker. She preceded him in death on June 2, 1998. Elmer graduated from High School in Wayland, MO. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp and served as a Military Police during WW II. He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church Missouri Synod of Keokuk and a member of the American Legion Post 41 in Keokuk. He had been employed at General Mills in Keokuk for thirty-four years, retiring in 1979. Elmer loved baseball and played during high school and attended Culver Stockton College in Canton, MO on a baseball scholarship. He was a talented pitcher, having played on several local leagues, including the Keokuk Goats, and pitched several no-hitter games. Elmer was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He loved dogs and had a faithful companion named Buster. His great-grandchildren were his pride and joy and he loved spending time with them. He is survived by one granddaughter, Cesilee Egley of Keokuk, two great-grandchildren, Deacon and Kaylee Burgess both of Keokuk and several cousins. He was also preceded in death by his son, Bruce Egley, his parents, one sister, Gertrude Egley and one brother, Gerald Egley. Graveside services with military rites were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, October 14th, 2014 in the Keokuk National Cemetery with Pastor Lester Dumar officiating.
