Obituary

Duane "Boomer" Edward Bowles, 87, a longtime Keokuk resident, died Saturday, October 30, 2010 at his home. He was born on March 19, 1923 in Keokuk, IA the son of Earl and Minnie Swift Bowles. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during WW II in the Pacific theater. He was employed for twenty-seven years with Beaty Machine Works in Keokuk, five years with Foote Mineral in Keokuk and five years with MMC Enterprises in Keokuk. He operated his own machine shop until his retirement. Mr. Bowles attended the Bel-Air Baptist Church of Keokuk. Duane enjoyed many hobbies and interests including golf at the Deer Run Golf Course, astronomy, archery, amateur radio, camping, radio controlled airplanes, photography, guns and computers. He enjoyed the company of his friends at the HyVee Coffee Club. He is survived by his son, David Schwarz and his wife Marlene of Keokuk, two grandchildren, Kimberly Schwarz and Jeffrey Schwarz both of California, one nephew Stuart Gibson, two nieces, Carole Barrett and Gloria Gibson all of Dallas Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Virginia Bowles Gibson. Graveside services with military rites were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, November 4, 2010 at the Keokuk National Cemetery with Pastor Mike Shea officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
