Obituary

Doran Lee Sammons, 72, of Carthage, IL died Friday, January 4, 2013 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, Iowa. He was born August 28, 1940 in LaHarpe, IL the son of Walt and Lelia Miller Sammons. Doran enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country. He was a member of the Laborers International Union of North America, Pekin Local # 231. Doran was an avid recreational and commercial fisherman. He enjoyed hunting, target shooting and blue grass music. He enjoyed playing the guitar, harmonica, ukulele and dulcimer. He is survived by his son Dannie Sammons and his wife Susan of Kernersville, NC, two grandchildren Katherine and Gabriel Sammons, a sister, Sharon Dickerson-Fink of Carthage, IL, a brother, Brian Dickerson and his wife Debora of Hamilton, IL, two half brothers, Junior Dickerson of Carthage, IL and Jim Dickerson and his wife Elva of Carthage, IL, his close companion, Beth Clinton of Carthage, IL, many nieces and nephews and his ex-wife, Judy Sammons of Orient, IA. He was preceded in death by his father Walt Sammons and his mother Lelia Sammons Dickerson, one son, Nick Duffy, a sister, Marilyn Fink and a sister-in-law, Velda Dickerson. Memorial services were held 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 9th, 2013 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Reverend David Lee officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the VA Medical Center in Iowa City.
