View Video Tribute Dollie Louise Whitaker, 97, of Keokuk, IA, died at 4:10 p.m., Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at Lexington Square in Keokuk, IA. She was born on March 26, 1909 near Alexandria, MO, the daughter of James and Laura Bell Rosencrans Scovern. On September 4, 1929 Dollie was united in marriage to James William Whitaker in Kahoka, MO. He preceded her in death on September 4, 1974. She graduated from Clark County Public Schools and was valedictorian of her class. Dollie was a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Keokuk, IA the Jennie Lee Sunday School Class and the Christian Women's Fellowship/M M Circle. She enjoyed doing different crafts and for many years sewed most of her clothes. She both knitted and crocheted and made many afghans and baby blankets. She also taught several people how to knit and crochet. When it was in vogue, she crocheted and crafted many bead necklaces. Dollie babysat for several children and especially enjoyed babysitting for her grandchildren. When she was still living in her own home, she was Grandma to all of the neighborhood children. She loved keeping up on all the news about what the great-grandchildren were doing. At the age of 66, she took driving lessons and learned how to drive her late husband's Buick and continued to drive until she was 92 years of age. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Rodger and Lucile Whitaker of Keokuk, IA, , four grandsons, Jay Whitaker and his wife Molly and Andrew and his wife Renee all of Keokuk, IA, Daniel Whitaker and his wife Shauna of Cedar Rapids, IA and Rodger Bryan Whitaker of Burlington, IA, seven great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Luke, Madelyn and Aden of Keokuk, IA, Lydia and Brooks of Cedar Rapids IA and Rodger Bryan of Burlington, IA, one brother, John Scovern of Kahoka, MO, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Raymond Wilson and his wife Vera, Byron Scovern and his wife Ludella, Ealy Lowe, George Scovern and his wife Vera, James Scovern and his wife Lela, four sisters, Anna Lowe Briggs and her husband John, Bessie Wilson and her husband Irvin, Cordelia Sinclair and her husband Archie and Juanita Hoskins Hird and her husbands Art and Marshall, a half-sister in childhood and a half brother in infancy. The Celebration of her life was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the First Christian Church in Keokuk. Burial was in the Frazee Cemetery in rural Alexandria, MO.
