Derek Clayton, 50, of Niceville, FL, formerly of Keokuk, passed away Thursday, January, 22, 2015 at his home due to heart complications.
Derek was born July 21, 1964 in Boston, MA, the first of four sons to Clifton and Alma Sue Scott Clayton.
He graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1982.
Derek was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served with honor and distinction as an artillery gunner.
Derek was extremely passionate about and an expert in several martial arts. He also had an unwavering love for fine cigars. He was well known and loved in his community and had a reputation for going above and beyond to help others in need and for standing strong for what he believed to be fair and just.
He is survived by three brothers, Byron of Des Moines, IA, Reginald and his wife Petra of Atlanta, GA and Shad of West Des Moines, IA, three nieces and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service was held at 1 p.m., Friday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Pastor Gerome Crayton officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Keokuk National Cemetery.
Visitation was held one hour prior to the service on Friday from 12-1 p.m. at the funeral home with family meeting with friends at that time.
