Obituary

Deborah Sue "Deb" Johnson, 59, of Hamilton, IL died peacefully in her sleep at home on Friday, January 15, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on July 5, 1956 in Keokuk, IA, the daughter of Donald and Doris Reid Robertson. She graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1974. She attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA and received her Bachelor's Degree in 1978. She continued her education at Northeastern University in Chicago, IL and received her Master's Degree in Counseling in 1989. On September 22, 1984, Deb was united in marriage to Steven Neal Johnson in Des Plaines, IL. He survives. She is also survived by her parents, Donald and Doris Robertson of Keokuk, one brother, Daniel (Amy) Robertson of Keokuk, one sister, Diana Robertson (Susan Butterfield) of Lawrence, KS, sister-in-law, Shari (Jim) Eide of Champaign, IL, one aunt, Mary Anne Roberts of Victorville, CA, one uncle, Tom Reid of Gainesville, GA, two nephews, Jeremey (Darlene) Robertson of San Diego, CA and Nathan (Jamie) Robertson of Cedar Rapids, IA, one great-niece Kayla Robertson of Cedar Rapids, two great-nephews, Brady and Blake Robertson of Cedar Rapids and many special friends including Don and Nancy Coole of New York. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ernie and Etta Fickle, Ernest Robertson, Martha Campbell and O.J. Reid. Deb founded the Guiding Light Christian Counseling Center in Hamilton, IL and was a counselor for over 25 years. She and her husband Steve also managed the River's Edge Bed and Breakfast in Keokuk, IA. Deb had an unwavering and deep faith in God and was a faithful member of the Evangelical Free Church in Keokuk. She was a willing worker in the church and had served as a Deaconess and church board secretary. She was a member of the Bible Babes and they were a great support to her. She was also a member of P.E.O. Chapter U. She loved hiking and riding her bicycle, seeing God's amazing love and grace for people. She enjoyed hiking in Colorado, visiting South Padre Island and biking up to Bristol State Park. Deb participated in bike hikes with the Faith Baptist Church in Grayslake, IL and also rode in RAGBRAI. She loved to cook and try new recipes. She also enjoyed working with her flowers and watching the birds that congregated in her yard. She was a fan of the Wizard of Oz and enjoyed watching the classic movie. Most important to Deb was her love of Jesus and spending quality time with her husband and her family. A Memorial Service was held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at the Evangelical Free Church in Keokuk with Pastor Craig Burton and Pastor Jack Klose officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk. Memorials may be made to the Evangelical Free Church Building Fund.
