Obituary

David Leo Sprunger, 78, of Keokuk, Iowa, met his Savior on November 19, 2013, following complications of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He was born January 1, 1935, in Kokomo, Indiana to Leo N Sprunger and Mary (Wanner) Sprunger. On January 28, 1956, he married the love of his life, Frances Eileen Johnson in Lafayette, Indiana. Dave graduated from Adams Central High School in Monroe, Indiana and Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Following graduation he went to work for Union Electric in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1962 the family moved to Lee County. After thirty-four years he retired as Union Electric Iowa District Manager. Over the years he was very involved in the Fort Madison Community. He had leadership roles including Fort Madison International Rotary President and Paul Harris Fellow, Fort Madison Chamber President, Fort Madison YMCA board and Fort Madison Community School District board. Dave enjoyed playing games with his grandchildren, providing wise advice to his children, drinking coffee with his friends and traveling with Fran to many parts of the world. He was an amazing finishing carpenter and skilled electrician. He found joy in following the many activities of his grandchildren as they grew. He will be missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Fran and his five children, Sandra Diane (Curt) Hilding of Shenandoah, IA, Debra Sue Bishop of Johnston, IA, Jean Anne (Roger) McEowen of Ankeny, IA, David Alan (Martha) of Independence, MO, and Randall Lee (Susan) of Keokuk. His grandchildren are Bryan (Lesley) Bishop, Randi (Joshua) Matics, Lisa Bishop, Jordan Sprunger, Michael McEowen, Samuel Sprunger, and Emily Sprunger. Step-grandchildren include Chris (Kristie) Hilding, Stephanie Houston, and Lori (Sam) Bass, great-grandaughter, Brooklyn Matics and step-great-grandchildren Curtis, Jayden, Sabrina, Hunter, Mavrick, Dylan, Alexsis and Lucas. Brothers Virgil Sprunger of Lincoln, IL and Frederick (Joyce) Sprunger of Bluffton, IN as well as nieces and nephews also survive. Keokuk Nazarene Church was Dave's passion for much of his life. His priorities were always God first and then his family. From his youth he served as financial secretary for whatever church he was in. At Keokuk Nazarene he served as Missions president, Sunday School superintendent, Sunday School teacher and church board member. Dave traveled to many parts of the world using his talents on short-term mission projects. But he was at his best when he was listening to a child sharing a story or comforting someone struggling. His memory can best be honored by memorial contributions to Nazarene Compassionate Ministries through Keokuk Nazarene Church or the David and Frances Sprunger Scholarship Fund at Olivet Nazarene University. A Celebration of Dave's life was held on Saturday, November 30th, at Keokuk Nazarene Church with Pastor Dana Jurgens officiating. Interment followed at Sandusky Cemetery in rural Keokuk.
