Danny Lee Smith, 68, of Burlington, IA, died Saturday, October 30, 2010 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, IA.
He was born on July 15, 1942 in Keokuk, IA, the son of Arlo and Dora Carter Smith. On July 5, 1963, Danny married the love of his life, Donna Rae Hanson in Keokuk, IA. She preceded him in death on June 24, 2008.
Danny graduated from Montrose High School in Montrose, IA with the Class of 1960. He received his Associate of Arts degree from Southeastern Community College in Keokuk where he was a member of the SCC Blackhawk Basketball team.
He had been employed in management at ATT for twenty-seven years and retired as Supervisor in 1988. He then worked at Airs Midwest, the Gaylord Company and Great Plains all in Burlington. Danny had also been a co-auctioneer for Auctions by Smith for thirty-six years.
In his younger years he was a member of the Jaycees and served as State president. He also was a member of the Dubuque Fighting Saints Hockey Booster Club and served as president for one term. Danny was a member of the Burlington Coin Club and was always willing to donate his auctioneering skills for Coin Club events. He was an avid bowler and had bowled in USBC Tournaments for twenty-seven years in a row.
Danny enjoyed collecting marbles and coins and was an avid softball player for many years. He also enjoyed going to Gaither Concerts every chance he could.
He is survived by one son, Danny Ryan Smith of Burlington, IA, three daughters, Gayle Richardson and her husband Mike of Marion, IA, Jodi Rader and her husband Mark of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Holly Rader and her husband Matt of Burlington, IA, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two sisters, Pat Moore and her husband Maurice and Rose Heidbreder and her husband Bob all of Montrose, two brothers, Arlo Smith and his wife Orla of Garner, IA and Paul Smith and his wife Faylene of Burlington, IA , thirteen nieces and nephews and a special friend, Sherrie of the Quad Cities. He was also preceded in death by his parents and one sister in infancy, Gloria Jean Smith.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Brother Chuck Gorsch and Pastor Mark Hanson officiating. Burial was in the Sandusky cemetery in Sandusky, IA.
A Celebration of Life service was held on Wednesday evening November 3, 2010 at the West Burlington Christian Church in West Burlington, IA.
