Daniel Joseph Dunagan, 71, of Keokuk, IA died Monday, October 30, 2017 at his home.
He was born September 18, 1946 in Keokuk the son of Joseph and Mary McNamara Dunagan. On September 27, 1969 he was united in marriage to Shari Stephens at the First Baptist Church in Keokuk. She survives.
Other survivors include one son, Jason Dunagan of Keokuk, one grandson, Charlie (C.J.) Dunagan of Keokuk, one sister, Sherry Jaspersen of Keokuk, one sister-in-law, Penny Hotop of Keokuk, six nephews, Dan Burke of Des Moines, IA, Robert (Teresa) Burke of Keokuk, Scott Burke of Keokuk, Tim Hardy of St. Louis, MO, Kory (Leah) Hotop of Keokuk, and Ethan (Alexis) Hotop of Keokuk.
He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, Charles and Helen Stephens, one sister, Christina (Tina) Viviano and one niece, Samantha Whiteside.
Danny attended Keokuk High School with the Class of 1965.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served his country for four years aboard the aircraft carriers USS Saratoga and USS Constellation during the Vietnam War.
Danny had been employed at several local plants and also at Hickey Construction in Keokuk, before he joined the Keokuk Fire Department in 1972. He continued to work at the fire department for the next twenty years, until his retirement in 1992. He also started several businesses including Dunagan and Son Sand Blasting and Dunagan Seed and Nut Company.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #41 and was also a member of the Lee County Republicans. In 1999 Dan began aggressively fighting for the No Zoning in the county which led him to run and win a seat on the Lee County Board of Supervisors in 2002.
Dan was always busy doing something or planning a new project. In 1991, he began to sandblast an old barn in Lima, IL. With the help of McDowell's Crane, Dan dismantled the barn and reassembled the barn frame in rural Keokuk which became his family home. Dan loved sports and played football and ran track. He loved to hunt, fish and mushroom hunt whenever he could.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Thursday, November 2nd, 2017 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Pastor Dale Thomas officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Keokuk National Cemetery.
