Dale Louis Carter, 88, of rural Montrose, IA died unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at his home. He was born on August 3, 1925 in Keokuk, IA, the son of Paul and Rozeltha Baily Carter. Dale was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country during WW II. He fought bravely and was the recipient of the Purple Heart medal. On February 1, 1946, Dale was united in marriage to Bessie C. Smith in Keokuk at the home of his brother, Don & Roberta Carter. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Linda Pickenpaugh and her husband Merel of Newark, OH and Pam Wentworth and her husband Keven of Bevercreek, OH, six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, a foster daughter, Launa LaVelle and a foster son, Mike Scoggins. He was preceded in death by his parents, one foster son, Kevin Hodges, four brothers, Albert "Doc", Glen, Paul "Junior" and Don Carter and three sisters, Viola Peterson, Dora Smith and Nellie St. Clair. Dale was a lifelong farmer in the Montrose area. He also sold DeKalb seed corn. He was a member of the Montrose Church of the Nazarene where he formerly served as the Sunday School Superintendent and a song leader for worship services. He was a talented woodworker and enjoyed making things out of old barn wood. Dale also was a very good vocalist and enjoyed singing at church. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 28th, 2014 at the Montrose Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Preston Smith officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Sandusky cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Montrose Church of the Nazarene.
