View Timeless Tributes Video Chester R. Carlson, 85, of Keokuk, IA, died Friday, October 10, 2008 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. He was born on February 27, 1923 in Keokuk, IA the son of Albert and Louise Johnson Carlson. On July 21, 1946 Chester was united in marriage to Mary Phillips in Powdertown, IA. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, Gary Carlson and his wife Katy of Iowa City, IA, Dan Carlson and his wife Debby of Urbandale, IA and Tom Carlson and his wife Diane of Keokuk, IA, five grandchildren, Celeste Carlson of Anderson, SC, Ryan Carlson and his wife Leslie of Des Moines, IA, Nathan Carlson and his companion Jennifer Staack of Des Moines, IA, Ann Kleinschmit and her husband Brad of Olathe, KS and Brett Carlson of Keokuk, IA, five great-grandchildren, Matt, Josh, Paige, Bailey and Kaylee, one brother, Donald Carlson and his wife Lucille of Keokuk, IA, one sister, Helen Turtle and her husband Harold of Keokuk, IA and three sisters-in-law, Marge Carlson, Mildred Carlson and Doris Carlson. He was preceded in death by his parents, and five bothers, Vernon, Ralph, Jim, Harold and Verl. He was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country during WW II. He had been employed at Sheller Globe in Keokuk for 42 ½ years, retiring in 1985. Chester was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Keokuk, the Elks Club, the American Legion Post #41 and the Hamilton VFW. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing golf, hunting, fishing, wordworking, playing cards and dancing. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 13 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Pastor Kimberly Riebe officiating. Burial with military rites will be on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Keokuk National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church of Keokuk.
