Obituary

Charles Edward Collins, 89, of Keokuk, IA, died Friday, May 20, 2016 at the Keokuk Area Hospital. He was born on September 5, 1926 in Keokuk, the son of Charles E. and Clara Flick Collins. He graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1944 and then attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA. Charles was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force and proudly served his country during WW II. He began his employment at General Mills/Henkel Corporation in Keokuk at the age of 18 and retired at the age of 55 in 1981. Charles attended the Evangelical Free Church in Keokuk and was a daily volunteer on the construction of their building. He also gave of his time and talent to help on the construction of Habitat for Humanity houses in Keokuk. In his younger years, Charles loved to bowl and enjoyed spending time with his friends at the Bowling Alley. He loved to travel and made many memories taking trips with his sisters. He loved Cadillacs and would never have any other kind of car. He is survived by his loving caregiver, Norma Varner of Keokuk, nieces and nephews, Lillian Kraus, Kay Vollers, Gerard Grogan, John Grogan, Susie Fink, Michael Grogan, Ray Martin, Rhonda Acton, Kevin Martin, Steve McMahan and Cathy Ludwig and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews and many friends He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, Louise McMahan, Arvilla Martin, Lillian Stahl and Hazel Grogan, one brother, Sylvanus "Beanie" Collins, three nieces, Jean Ketterer, Ellen Marie Grogan and Margaret Taylor, three nephews, Tom Grogan, Lt. Commander Robert McMahan and Junior Collins. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk. Burial with military rites was in the Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk. Memorials may be made to the Evangelical Free Church or Habitat for Humanity.
