Catherine Winfrey

Catherine Marie Winfrey, 68, of Kahoka passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at SSM Health St. Clare Hospital in Fenton, Missouri.

Catherine was born August 30, 1958 in Joplin, Missouri the daughter of John K. and Gladys Starr Patrick.

She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire on December 20, 1981, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. She received her teaching certificate in Kansas in 1982 and in Missouri in 1983.

She married John Phipps-Winfrey. Although they later divorced, Catherine and John remained close friends until his passing.

Catherine devoted her professional life to education and was employed by the Clark County R-1 School District for thirty-two years, retiring in 2013. Teaching was far more than an occupation to Catherine—it was a calling. She cared deeply for her students and gave generously of her time, her resources, and herself. She had a special place in her heart for children with special needs and was very involved with Special Olympics. Her devotion to her students extended far beyond the classroom, and she made a lasting difference in the lives of many of the young people she taught and worked with.

That same devotion was evident in everything Catherine loved. Her dogs held a very special place in her heart, especially Molly, her longtime furry companion. Catherine loved with every fiber of her soul. She gave freely, cared deeply, and possessed a beautiful and generous spirit.

Catherine was also a Green Bay Packers fan. Having grown up in Wisconsin, her love for the Packers began early and remained with her throughout her life. When football season arrived, she cheered them on each week.

In retirement, Catherine continued giving to others through her volunteer work at the senior center and her involvement with the public library. She loved to read, and her faith was an important part of her life. She treasured her Thursday Bible studies with friends and especially enjoyed listening to Rayjean Martin play the piano. Above all, Catherine treasured the companionship of the many friends she made throughout her life.

Catherine is survived by Molly, her faithful furry companion, and by many dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing her.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Steve Patrick and Timothy Patrick.

A gathering of remembrance will be held from 2-4 pm September 24 at the Clark County Senior Center in Kahoka.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clark County Senior Center in memory of Catherine.
