Carrie M. Gates, 87, of Keokuk, Iowa, died Monday, September 22, 2008 at the River Hills Village in Keokuk, IA.
She was born November 16, 1920 in San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Waldermere and Carrie Melinda Peterson Testman. On August 22, 1942 she was united in marriage to Dallas Gates in Kahoka Missouri. He preceded her in death on April 4, 1964.
Carrie lovingly cared for many preschool children while being employed at the Keokuk Child Daycare Center as the Assistant Director from 1970 - 1992.
She graduated from Wayland High School with the class of 1939 and attended Northeast Missouri University.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Keokuk, Iowa, Women of ELCA, and the Rebekah Circle.
Carrie enjoyed bowling and loved to play bingo. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother and was loved by all those she touched. Carrie also loved to spend time with her family.
She is survived by two daughters, Suann Marshall and her husband Roger of Keokuk, IA, and Kathy Dice and her husband Don of Arbela, MO, one son, Mark Gates and his wife Barb of Keokuk, IA, eight grandchildren, Tammy Harper and her husband Jeff of Independence, MO, Bryan Marshall, Eric Gates and his wife Angie all of Keokuk, IA, Tony Marshall and his wife Rachel of Troy, IL, Carrie Todd and her husband Will of Carmen, IL, Stefanie Brush, Memphis, MO, Nicole Dice and her fiancé Jason Marshall and Matt Dice all of Maryville, MO, five great grandchildren, Carrie, Aaron and Cameron Harper and Ethan and Natalie Brush, a sister, Isabelle Ewers of Pryor, OK and a special sister in law, Frances Testman and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband she was also preceded in death by an infant granddaughter, Sarah Gates, four brothers, Ray, Glenn, Clyde and Walter Testman and, two sisters, Sarah Parish and Gladys Laisle and a brother in infancy.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 25 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Reverend Ralph Andersen officiating. Burial was in the Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk, IA.
Memorials may be made to the River Hills Village or First Lutheran Church.
