Obituary

Carl A. Schmidt, Jr., 85, formerly of Keokuk, IA died January 8, 2011 at his home in Rancho Mirage, CA. He was born on July 24, 1925 in Keokuk, the son of Carl and Ella Leu Schmidt. He married Beverly Bennett on December 21, 1946 in Ft. Madison, IA. She preceded him in death on December 8, 2000 in Amsterdam, NY. Carl was a graduate of Keokuk High School, the University of Iowa and the St. Louis College of Mortuary Science. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during WW II. After ten years in business with his father at the Schmidt Memorial Home in Keokuk, he started a long and successful career in the corrugated box business, beginning with the Hoerner Box Company in Keokuk and Tupelo, Mississippi. In 1962, he joined the Wyerhauser Company in Cedar Rapids as plant manager. In 1966, Carl was hired to manage the construction of the General Fibre Box plant in Amsterdam and remained as plant manager through 1988. After retirement from what became Longview Fibre, he served as vice president of Sofco in Scotia, NY until his retirement in 1998. After the death of his wife, Carl moved to the Palm Springs CA area. Carl was a very civic minded man and had been a volunteer in many community organizations. Carl received many awards for his business acumen and volunteer efforts. Carl had a very strong faith in God and was a member and past senior warden of St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Amsterdam. He had been a member of the Masonic Order since 1958. He also was a member of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry and the Amsterdam Rotary Club. Carl is survived by three daughters, Deborah Julander and her husband John of Greenwood Village, CO, Kristin Dallos of Schenectady, NY and Lori Carroll and her husband Paul of Muscatine, IA, one son, Jeffrey Schmidt and his wife Valerie of Colorado Springs, CO, six grandchildren, two great-grandsons, two sisters, Marilyn Peper of Dallas TX and Judy Huiskamp of Morning Sun, IA and two sisters-in-law. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Tyler Schmidt. Graveside services with military rites will be held at 11 a.m., Friday at the Keokuk National Cemetery. Friends and family may meet at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA at 10:30 a.m. and go in procession to the cemetery. In honor of Carl's love of golf the family asks that everyone wear casual golf attire.
