Carl C. Huiskamp, 93, of Keokuk, IA, died Monday, July 7, 2008 at River Hills Village in Keokuk, IA. He was born on February 26, 1915 in Keokuk, IA, the son of James W. Huiskamp Sr. and Eva Logan Huiskamp. On December 27, 1938, Carl was united in marriage to Lucille Miller at the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk, IA. She survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Barbara Poe of Keokuk, IA, Tina Huiskamp and her husband Don LeHew of Chandler, AZ and Leah Gudgel and her husband David of Keokuk, IA, one son, Tom Huiskamp and his wife Verna of Salt Lake City, UT, twelve grandchildren, Cynthia Crew, Timothy Poe, Dana Boots, Vanessa Kowalski, Travis LeHew, Matthew Huiskamp, Russell Huiskamp, Carson Huiskamp, Clare Logsdon, Elizabeth Connor, Andrew Gudgel, Adam Gudgel, nineteen great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren, He was preceded in death by two brothers, James W. Huiskamp, Jr. and William Logan Huiskamp, two grandsons, Roger LeHew and Samuel Christian Poe. Carl graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1932. He attended Duke University for three years, then attended Iowa State University where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Agronomy. He enlisted in the United States Navy in April of 1944. He trained in amphibious warfare and served on the U.S.S. Pondera-APA 191 during WW II. His ship carried troops, invasion supplies and twenty-six Higgins boats that took the soldiers to the beach. While under kamikaze attack every night at Okinawa, they carried wounded from the 5th Marine Division to Saipan. His war experiences created friendships with fellow soldiers that lasted a lifetime. Carl was an energetic and hard working man, working in the Investment Trust business for twenty five years and in Farm Management for twenty years. He was very philanthropic toward many city projects. For example, he was instrumental in raising funds that built the Keokuk Public Library. He served on many community boards, and also helped numerous young men achieve college goals. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Keokuk, IA and the Keokuk Country Club. He enjoyed playing golf. Carl won the Senior State Golf Championship and also accomplished fourteen holes in one during his lifetime. His greatest love was baseball. At age 18 he coached American Legion baseball and took his team to a State Title. He played for the St. Louis Browns Farm Team for three years and scouted for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He shared his love of the game with many young people in Keokuk, coaching nine years in YMCA League baseball and eight years in the American Legion program. He also spent five years coaching boys and girls golf at Keokuk High School. Carl was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and one of his greatest joys was spending time with his family. He was a faithful fan of his grandchildren's school and sport activities. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 11, 2008 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Keokuk, IA with Reverend Emmanuel Dass officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Memorials were established for the Trinity United Methodist Church, the Keokuk Public Library and the Lee County Hospice.
