Obituary

Bonnie Jean Council, 93, of Keokuk, IA, died Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Lexington Square Healthcare Center in Keokuk. She was born July 17, 1921 in Lake Charles, LA, the daughter of Frank and Idabel McGowen Houston. She graduated from Lake Charles High School and Southwest Louisiana Institute. Bonnie Jean taught second grade before marrying Lt. Robert Ray Council on December 25, 1942 in Lake Charles, LA. The wife of an Air Force officer, she lived in many states throughout the United States until retiring to Ft. Worth, TX. In 1993, they moved to Hamilton, IL to live near their daughter. Bonnie Jean was a member of the First Christian Church in Keokuk. She is survived by one daughter, Marilyn (Al) Hempen of St. Charles, MO, one son, Ray (Kathy) Council of Shawnee, KS, three grandchildren, Alison "Nikki" (Alejandro) Ramirez of Chesterfield, MO, Tyler (Rebekah) Hempen of St. Peters, MO and Alex Council of Independence, MO, three great-grandchildren, Nicolas "Nico" Ramirez, McKenzie and Peyton Hempen. She was preceded in death by her husband on September 1, 2001, her parents, two brothers and six sisters. Private family graveside services will be held at the Keokuk National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Keokuk or the activity department of Lexington Square Healthcare Center in Keokuk.
