Betty Jean Nickel, 80 formerly of Quincy, IL passed away Monday, November 8, 2021 in Dallas, Tx at the Medical City Heart Hospital.
She was born March 23, 1941 in Luray, Mo. at their home to parents Howard Everett Harvey and Velma Ruth Harvey.
Betty graduated from Kahoka High School with the Class of 1959 and then went on to join Blessings School of Nursing, graduating in 1962.
Betty's first union in 1961 to George Samples was blessed with four children; Michael, David, Angel and Kelly. They later divorced after 15 years. In 1985 she married the love of her life, John Nickel who preceded her in death.
Survivors include one brother Charles Harvey; two sons, Michael Samples (Sheryl) of St. Jo, TX and David Samples (Linda) of Vicksburg, MS,; two daughters, Angel Leenerts (Michael) of Fort Worth, TX, and Kelly Wren (Trent) of Quincy, IL.; nephew Rodney Harvey (Joni) of Luray, MO; 7 grandchildren, Bobbie Leenerts, Dusti Samples, Keriann Leenerts, Jodi Samples, Miles Leenerts, Ian Vosse and Andrea Leenerts; 4 great-grandchildren, many cousins and life-long friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John Nickel, and special friend Ken Leinweber.
Betty's nursing career spanned over 40 years, beginning in Pediatrics, moving to St. Mary's Hospital on Med/Surgery then working her way up to House Supervisor at Blessing Hospital, finally specializing in Behavioral Health. Medical issues forced her retirement, though later she would still volunteer when she could.
She enjoyed having lunch with her nursing school friends and colleagues, church activities and gardening. She loved going mushroom hunting, picking blackberries and spending time with her family.

A funeral service will be held Friday, Nov. 19th at 2p.m., at the Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka, Mo followed by a graveside service at Combs Cemetery in Luray, Mo.
