Beryl Lamar Roberts, 91, of Keokuk, IA died Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at his home.
He was born on September 27, 1920 in Keokuk, IA, the son of Harold Lamar and Nellie Marie Lovell Roberts. On October 12, 1940, Beryl was united in marriage to Alma Mae Brown. She preceded him in death on June 5, 2009.
Beryl graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1938.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country during WW II. One of the highlights of his life was being able to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington DC for WW II veterans.
He had been the service manager at Higgins Motor Company from 1948 – 1954. He then owned and operated Roberts Auto Service from 1955 until his retirement at age 61.
He was a faithful member of the First Christian Church of Keokuk, IA and served as a Deacon, a member of various committees and the President of the Friendly Class. He had been a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge #13 since 1950, serving in all chairs of the order, and served as chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the American Legion Post #41 in Keokuk and the VFW Post 9802 in Hamilton, IL. He served with the Keokuk Emergency Corps for many years and was a past commander. He received a key to the City of Keokuk for his leadership in the corp. Beryl had served as a Boy Scout Leader and was proud to have had twenty seven boys in his troop receive the Eagle Award.
Beryl enjoyed fishing, trap-shooting, camping and traveling. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and good friends.
He is survived by one son, Richard Lamar Roberts of Inver Grove Heights, MN, one daughter, Bonnie Roberts Benesh of Newton, IA, four grandchildren, Pamela Roberts, Tom Roberts, Jared Benesh and his wife Erin and Joseph Benesh and his wife Jennifer, three great-grandchildren, Kylianna Benesh, Cadence Erickson and Awbrie Roberts and one sister-in-law, Alice Marie Hammel of Keokuk, IA.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother, Bess Arthur Roberts.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Monday, December 12at the First Christian Church of Keokuk, IA with Reverend Bill Mitchell officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Keokuk National Cemetery.
