View Memorial Tribute Bertha Helen Nicol, 87, of Keokuk, IA, died January 1, 2006 at the Montebello Healthcare Center in Hamilton, IL. She was born August 17, 1918 in Keokuk, IA, the daughter of William Henry and Bertha Stella Douglas Cochran. On July 27, 1951 she was united in marriage to John N. Nicol in Kahoka, MO. He preceded her in death on September 1, 2002. Bertha and her husband resided in Davenport, IA for twenty-eight years. In 1984 they moved to Keokuk, IA Bertha was a faithful member of the Anchor of Hope Church in Keokuk. Before moving to Davenport she was employed at the Swift Company in Keokuk, IA. She attended Scott Community College in Davenport where she received certification in Dietetic Supervision. She then was employed at the Garret Nursing Home in Davenport as a Dietetic Supervisor. She loved to play Bingo and also enjoyed going to the Riverboat. She enjoyed quilting and had crafted many keepsakes for her family. In the spring and summer she always enjoyed planting and tending to her vegetable garden. Bertha loved her family and treasured the time she was able to spend with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Barry and her husband Vernon of Davenport, IA, Barbara Egley and her husband Robert of St. Francisville, MO, and Charlotte Cooksey and her husband Christopher, four sons, Victor Baldwin and his wife Babette of Wayland, MO, William Baldwin and his wife Dixie of Warsaw, IL, John R. Nicol and his wife Judy of Keokuk, IA, and Robert Nicol and his wife Barb of Blue Grass, IA, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents, four daughters, Janice Baldwin, Mary Nicol, Betty Nicol, and Mildred Cady, one son, Charles Nicol, four brothers, Harry, Merle, Woodrow and Bill Cochran, one sister Ruby Yarington and one grandson, Charles Nicol. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Anchor of Hope Church in Keokuk, IA with Reverend John Varner officiating. Burial was in the Wyaconda Cemetery in Wyaconda, MO. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army in Keokuk.
