Obituary

Barbara S. Altgilbers, 59, of Keokuk, IA, died Friday, September 20, 2024 at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in Ft. Madison, IA.

She was born on July 23, 1965 in Clarinda, IA, the daughter of John and Elizabeth "Beth" (Ching) Kerr. She graduated from Oelwein High School with the Class of 1983.

On August 2, 1986, Barbara was united in marriage to Gary Altgilbers in Oelwein, IA. He survives.

She is also survived by three sons, Jared Altgilbers of Keokuk and Jacob Altgilbers of New Albany, IN and Devon Altgilbers and his wife Haylee of Keokuk and two grandchildren, Cali and Kyle. Other survivors include her parents, John and Beth Kerr of Oelwein, IA, one sister, Margaret Myers and her husband Bill of Charleston, WV and one brother, Daniel David Kerr and his wife Janelle of Des Moines, IA, her mother-in-law, Carol Altgilbers of Quincy, IL and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Barbara had been employed at an early childcare center in Quincy as a para-educator, at Lee County Abstract and most recently at the Lee County Recorder's Office.

She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Keokuk where she served as a ruling elder.

Some of Barbara's favorite hobbies included reading, arts and crafts, doing cross stitch, gardening, music and playing the trumpet. She was a very outgoing person and loved visiting with people. She touched many lives with her smile, her easy conversation and her kind heart.

Funeral services was held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Presbyterian Church in Keokuk with Pastor Diane Ludington officiating.

Visitation was held from 5 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with the family meeting with friends at that time.

Memorials may be made to the United Presbyterian Church of Keokuk.
