Archie "Jim" Hammel, 87, of Keokuk, IA died Thursday, April 7, 2011 at the Montrose Health Center in Montrose, IA. He was born August 27, 1923 in Johnstown, Colorado, the son of Walter and Katie Brown Hammel. On February 8, 1948, Archie was united in marriage to Helen Howren in Keokuk, IA. She preceded him in death on December 1, 2003. Archie worked for McDowell's for 30 years as a heavy equipment operator. After retiring in 1985, Archie and Helen enjoyed winters in Florida and summers in Iowa. He was a lifelong and faithful follower of Jesus Christ and a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk, IA where he served as an elder. He enjoyed bowling, camping, fishing and playing cards. He was a very caring man and devoted to his wife and children. He is survived by three daughters, Beverly Hammel of Keokuk, IA, Linda Lucas of Moscow Mills, MO, Janyce Hammel and her partner Gaylia McDaniel of Elk Grove Village, IL, two sons, Danny Hammel of Keokuk, IA, and Paul Hammel and his wife Tina of Palmyra, MO, three grandsons, Matthew Lucas and his wife Jessica of Columbia, MO, Steven Lucas and his wife Katy of Moscow Mills, MO, and Ryan Hammel of Palmyra, MO, five great grandchildren Andrew, Jacob and Nathanial Lucas of Moscow Mills, MO, and Kaden and Kennedy Lucas of Columbia, MO, along with many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, April 11, 2011 at the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk, IA. Burial was in the Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk, IA. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul United Church of Christ or Lee County Hospice.
