Alice Mae Gilbert, 72, of Kahoka, MO died Monday at the Scotland County Hospital in Memphis, MO. She was born April 19, 1939 in Cedar Rapids, IA, the daughter of Lawrence Wesley and Lucille Mae Cunningham Barnes. She worked at Dadant and Sons in Kahoka, MO as a candle maker and retired in November of 2000. Alice was a strong independent woman. She was an avid Cubs fan and had many notebooks full of stats and records that she kept from the games she watched. She loved to read especially westerns. She enjoyed her monthly shopping trips with her daughters and cherished the time she spent with them. She is survived by her two daughters, Alice "Lucy" Benedict and her husband Michael of Fairfield, IA, and Kathy Sue Howell and her husband Gale of Kahoka, MO, one grandson, Chad Benedict of Fairfield, IA, a great granddaughter, Addie Benedict of Fairfield, IA, her cousins, Georgia Erickson and her family of Gorin, MO, Charlotte Dabney and her family of Hannibal, MO, Linda Kay Ganley and her family and Bernice Vinson and her family of Keokuk, IA, along with her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, step mother, Lucie (Martin) Barnes, a brother Ralph Barnes and a step-brother, Joe Martin. A Gathering of Remembrance was held from 2 – 4 p.m. Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka, Missouri. Memorials are suggested to the Local Library of the donor's choice or to the American Cancer Society.
