Jeanette Gertrude Betts, 86, of Glendale, AZ, formerly of Keokuk, IA, died July 22, 2005 in Glendale. Her husband, Arthur Albertis Betts died on August 8, 2005 in Glendale at the age of 86. Jeanette was born on March 25, 1919 in Clarence, MO, the daughter of Sena Frank and Anna Lee Smith Worman. From a young age, she was raised by her stepfather, Victor Leroy Harris. Art was born on February 6, 1919 in Keokuk, IA, the son of Charles William and Jessie Viola Henson Betts. On March 22, 1939, Art and Jeanette were united in marriage in Keokuk, IA where they made their home for many years. They moved to Glendale, AZ in 1983 and enjoyed their retirement years there. Art was a veteran of the United States Army and courageously served his country during WW II He served with the 147th Infantry Regiment in the Pacific Theater, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and New Caldonia. He received his honorable discharge on April 10, 1946. Jeanette had been employed at Woolworth's in Keokuk, IA and retired in 1975. Art had been an employee of the Union Electric Company in Keokuk for 38 years, retiring in 1975. Art and Jeanette were members of the New Testament Christian Church in Keokuk, IA and the Glendale Christian Church in Arizona. It was their desire to serve the Lord faithfully wherever they were located. Family was very important to Art and Jeanette. They dearly loved their children and grandchildren and cherished the time they were able to spend with their family. Art loved to play golf and had won many tournaments and trophies both in Iowa and Arizona. He also enjoyed helping his son work on cars. Jeanette loved to read and crochet. Since living in Glendale, she had become an avid Phoenix Sun fan. In her younger years, she had enjoyed playing golf. Art and Jeanette are survived by one son, Arthur L. Betts and his wife Linda Schevers Betts of Keokuk, IA, one daughter, Nancy Gibson of Glendale, AZ, three grandchildren, Cindy Betts Pataky and her husband Robert of Herdon, VA, Jeff Betts and his wife Michele of Boisie, ID, Deanna Corrigan of Glendale, AZ, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Jeanette is also survived by one brother, Harold Worman and his wife Dorothy Ruth of Rock Island, IL, one half-sister, Janice Carter of Ft. Madison, IA, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, father and step-father, one granddaughter, Gina Lee Ann Leonard, and two great-great-grandchildren. Art is also survived by three sisters, Alice Peel and her husband Bill, Joan Hendricks, and Jessie Mae Betts all of Keokuk, IA. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, two brothers, Louis Betts and Oscar Betts one sister Mildred Glasgow, one granddaughter and two great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service for Art and Jeanette was held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, October 6th at the New Testament Christian Church in Keokuk with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial was in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Military rites were presented in honor of Art's service in the U.S. Army. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
