Obituary for Betty Black

Betty Black, 89, of Canton, MO, formerly of Wayland, MO died Friday, January 4, 2019 at the Lewis County Nursing Home in Canton.

She was born on September 1, 1929 in Fort Madison, IA, the daughter of Jerry and Nancy Lyttaker Bishop.

In 1946 Betty was united in marriage to Paul Shelton, to this union Elizabeth “Sally” Shelton Shepherd was born. Paul preceded her in death in 1948. On May 2, 1979, she was united in marriage to George W. Black in New London, Missouri. George preceded her in death on August 22, 2007.

Besides her husbands she was also preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Elizabeth “Sally” Shepherd and a brother, William Bowen.

She was a member of the Wayland First Baptist Church.

Betty worked as a nurse’s aide for 35 years; with 4 of those years being at the Clark County Nursing Home.

She is survived by two step-daughters, Tina (Patrick) Sheeley of Keokuk, IA and Georgia Whittaker of Hannibal, MO, 3 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren, three sisters, Hazel Randall, Helen Joy Kemper and Jackie Kuda, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 8,. at the Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka. Burial will be held in the Kahoka Cemetery.

Visitation was held an hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home with the family meeting with friends from 1 – 2 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Lewis County Nursing Home.
