William Douglas Mercer (Smeltser)

William Douglas Mercer (Smeltser), 47, of Keokuk, IA died Monday, June 20, 2011 at his home.

He was born on July 16, 1963 in Keokuk, IA, the son of William C. Smeltser and Andra Louise Mercer. On May 18, 2000, William was united in marriage to Sherry Garrigues in Wayland, MO. She survives.

Other survivors include his mother, Andra Mercer of Greenville, TN, one step-daughter, Rhondi June Garrigues of Portage, IN, several grandchildren including, Coralee Ember Bauswell, Korbin Dominic Bauswell, Steven Lay and Jarret Lay, one sister, Terri Smith and her husband Danny of Greenville, TN, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph and Leah Coubal of Lake Station, IN, aunts and uncles, Dallas and Barb Smeltser of Alexandria, MO, Ed and Cledia Smeltser of Keokuk, IA, Don and Julie Smeltser of Wayland, MO, Albert and Kay Smeltser of Hamilton, IL, Floyd Smeltser of Alexandria, MO and other aunts and uncles from Missouri, several cousins, nieces and nephews and his very special friends, Jacob Fox of Wayland, MO and Marla and Jay Wilson of Wayland, MO.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

William graduated from Quincy High School in Quincy, IL with the Class of 1982. He was a veteran of the United States Marines.

He had been employed at Keokuk Steel Castings in Keokuk, IA. He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church in Kahoka, MO.

William enjoyed fishing, mushrooming, camping and recycling.

A Gathering of Remembrance for family and friends was held Friday June 24, 2011 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA .
